Personal Exemptions

The dollar amounts set by the state are in terms of just value. This requires that they be adjusted by the town's certified ratio.

Homestead Exemption

This exemption is available to residents that apply by April 1st of each year, and have maintained their primary residence in Maine for a minimum of 12 months. The law was changed in 2004, and the exemption is now $13,000 at 100% certified ratio.

Veteran's Exemption

All Veterans who are 62 years old, served in a recognized war period and were honorably discharged are eligible for this exemption. Un-remarried widow/widowers of veterans who would have been 62 years old and paraplegic veterans regardless of age are also eligible. For WWI, the exemption is $7,000; for all other wars, the exemption is $6,000; for paraplegic veterans, the exemption is $50,000.

Blind Exemption

This $4,000 exemption is available to taxpayers who are deemed legally blind by their eye doctor.
