Loons have their legs set very far back on their bodies; this makes them excellent swimmers, but prevents them from walking well on land. Consequently, loons build their nests within inches of the water. A careless boat wake can swamp the nest. Result: no loon chicks this year. Keep your boat well away from any known loon nesting areas, and avoid making waves during nesting season. Please remember that you are responsible for any damage caused by your boat wake, whether it's to wildlife, or to public or private property.
