Paint the Town

Karen Schroeder Daniels from Paint the Town in Harrison will be at the Public Safety Building in Raymond, on October 1 at 6:30pm, to take you through the steps to create your own Folk Star Painting, a relaxing background of greens blending into blues and surrounded by the rustic greys of an old window sill with bittersweet vines. Add your own favorite colors to make this work of art your own. Cost is $40 and includes paint supplies and a 16 x 20 canvas you take home to enjoy. Please register by calling 655-4283 or email sally.holt@raymondvillagelibrary.org to reserve your place. This is a fundraiser for the Raymond Village Library. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a door prize.

Maine Author Series

On Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30, Marilyn Weymouth Sequin, author of Hidden History of the Sebago Lakes Region, will be at the library to discuss the quirky characters and surprising events that have shaped a robust community history throughout the Sebago Lakes region, including Nathaniel Hawthorne and a Chinese Statue believed to be responsible for suspicious misfortunes on the shores of Long Lake. Marilyn was born and educated in Maine and has spent parts of the last 27 summers vacationing at camps in the Sebago Lakes Region. This program is free and open to the public. There will be books for purchase following the program. Please pre-register to reserve your place by calling the library at 655-4283 or email sally.holt@raymondvillagelibrary.org.

For the fourth program of the Maine Author Series, Kevin Mannix, former WCSH Channel Six weatherman, will present his autobiography, Weathering Shame, which sheds light on his little-known mental health struggles and aims to address the stigma and mental shame around mental illness. In a recent open letter Mannix writes,”…shame cuts across all walks of life and everyone deals with it on some level….” This presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 21, 6:30pm at the library. It is free and open to the public. There will be a book signing after the presentation. To reserve your place, please call the library at 655-4283 or email sally.holt@raymondvillagelibrary.org

Lawyer at the Library

Miklos Pongratz, attorney at law, will be at the library on Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 7pm to meet with people on a drop in basis to answer legal questions and provide pro-bono advice. Attorney Pongratz provides a variety of services which include criminal and civil issues, as well as family matters, legal documents and corporate formation and maintenance. He has practiced since 2006 in Raymond, serving the Lakes Region and Southern Maine communities. Attorney Pongratz’s website is www.pongratzlaw.com.

Columbus Day

The library will be closed in celebration of Columbus Day and will reopen on Wednesday, October 14.

Annual Board Meeting

The Annual Board Meeting will take place at the library on Monday, October 19 at 6:00PM. There will be a review of the year and election of trustees and officers. This meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

Book Group

The book chosen for October is The End of Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. Facing the end of her life, Mary Anne Schwalbe and her son, Will, spent many hours together. To pass the time, they would talk about the books they were reading. Eventually, an informal book club of two was born. Through their wide range of reading, we are reminded how books can change the way that we feel about the world around us. A moving memoir of caregiving, mourning, and love, the book is also about the joy of reading and the ways that joy is multiplied when we share it with others. The book group will meet Thursday, October 29 at 7:00pm. The book will be available at the library upon request.

Halloween Treats

Each year the residents in the Raymond Village Area receive up to 400 trick-or-treaters on Halloween. It has been the custom for the Raymond Village Library to help out by collecting goodies, which will be distributed to the neighborhood. Once again we ask our generous patrons to donate whatever treats they can, to placate the “little goblins”. Please bring your donations into the library, by Monday, October 26 so they can be passed out in time. In this way we continue to be the wonderful community that we all appreciate and support.
